Ahmed Nazmi

Ahmed Nazmi Started off as a piano player at the age of 6, then learning the lute and guitar as he grew up, Nazmi took a turn at the age of 15, when he discovered his passion for playing the bass. This passion drove him from the Egyptian countryside (hometown Mitt Ghamr) to the metropolis of Cairo, where the diverse music scene encouraged his growth as a musician and composer.

As he continues to develop his professional signature by revisiting his rich heritage with a fresh perspective. He delicately blends the traditions of jazz and African music with Egyptian music into a distinctive, original approach to bass playing.

Nazmi’s first solo Bass album “ETHBAT HALA” was recorded in July 2012. It is the first solo album produced by a Bassist in Egypt and features some of the finest musicians in Egypt as well as internationally, such as the Syrian saxophone player Basel Rajoub, and the Dutch/Iranian percussionist Babak Madda.

The breakthrough for him was when he wrote 'Shams', the title track of the album, in 2015. It was a creative revo- lution for him, as he shifted the bass from the back- ground to the focal point of the track, where it duets with the piano.

"There is a very distinctive difference in this album which is the sophistication of the harmony and the role of the piano, whereas on my first album I didn't include piano at all." Nazmi says.

Indeed, the piano adds a distinct stylistic flavor to the album. 'Shams' would define the trajectory of the other songs on the album, and solidify the concept upon which they are based: the shape shifting bass, which maneuvers smoothly between leading the melody and maintaining the groove. "I feel a sense of maturity in my playing and a desire to be unique in what I do as a bass player and a composer."
