Otaak Band is an ensemble dedicated to preserving folkloric music and traditions, and propelling them into the future with lyres, drums and voices. Miguel Merino created Otaak Band in 2009 to feature the East-African lyre, the simsimiyya or tambur, and explore its unique and unusual sounds. Otaak's current lineup features the most outstanding musicians playing Egyptian, Nubian and Sudanese folkloric music today, as well as Ali al-Abady, who participated in the golden age of Nubian pop music throughout the 1970s. These musicians represent the generation that has grown up steeped in their cultural traditions and will develop and adapt them in the future.
